One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware

Have you ever thought that spending a few weeks on a tropical island with your significant other sounds like exactly what you need? You may think again after reading One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware.

When Nico and Lyla are selected, along with four other couples, to take part in a new reality TV show on a secluded island, they can't wait to arrive. However, the bliss doesn't last long. The first night on the island doesn't go as planned as Nico and Lyla are separated following the first of the shows games which sees them sleeping in different villas, then thing go from bad to worse as a violent storm tears through the island, destroying most of the living quarters and shattering the lives of the participants. With no way to contact the outside world, the contestants are thrown into panic and desperation as they realise they are trapped, and not all of the participants are as friendly as they seem.

The story is a fast paced, high-tension murder thriller that will keep you guessing until the end. The characters are well developed, if a little clichéd, and I did find it hard sometimes to connect or sympathise with some of them. Having said that, I particularly liked Layla and her sensible, methodical way of thinking. There is of course a subtle twist that I admittedly guessed, but it was still a thrilling read, helped along by conveniently short chapters. I often found myself thinking "just one more chapter" into the wee small hours.

So, if you're looking for a honeymoon beach read or something to transport you away from your hectic daily life for a short while, I would definitely give One Perfect Couple a shot!

A bit about me…

Hi, I'm Joanne Harnett; I live in Crawley with my husband, my two daughters and my tortoise. My career has primarily been in childcare. These days, I am mainly a stay at home mum but still work part time at local children's day nursery. My passions are reading and crochet when I get the chance. I also enjoy baking, who doesn't love a cup of tea and a slice of cake whilst reading right!
